LIFELONG TEXTILE ARTIST OF NON-TRADITIONAL WORKS
with: Barbara Schulman
Thursday March 6th / 7pm
Barbara Schulman is a weaver-embroiderer-quiltmaker-experimenter who delights in deconstructing completed work which is then reassembling into new pieces. She was head of the fibers program at Kutztown University for 19 years and is now a full-time artist. Barbara has work in the current exhibit Assemblage: Contemporary Fiber Art, at the Allentown Art Museum, and is known for her unconventional approach to textile and fiber arts, creating both two- and three-dimensional works of art that surprise the viewer with their inclusions of unexpected materials. “My primary obsession is pattern developed by repeat forms, stitches, common objects, hand embroidery, or sewing machine drawing, because empty space makes me very nervous.” Her presentation will depict her deconstruction method, including previous and current work.
