On Tuesday Lynn did a marathon weeding. Wednesday Dottie and Charlotte did more weeding and transplanting and managed to work through the area of the Madder and identify the Madder plants and weed around them. We have 5 Madder Plants. It was hot and humid and we were there for 2 hours on Wednesday. The Awbury staff has cut down the tall weeds around our beds so we don’t have to worry as much about those seeds taking hold in our beds. Thanks ladies for a valiant effort in the hot sun.
The Amaranth seeds are sprouting! I think some of the Woad seeds from Lori are sprouting as well. The rain this week has helped. The Scotch broom seeds given to us by Lori have not sprouted yet. We planted a Helianthus and a Solidago in the green bed. Also added 3 Woad Plants to the blue bed. We should have a nice bunch of Woad to harvest the leaves this year and we need a volunteer or two to harvest and have a dye pot and make dye cards from the Woad. Charlotte harvested some of the Dyer’s Broom because it is in bloom and time to harvest. There is more is someone wants to have a dye pot from the Dyer’s Broom. We have 3 Dyer’s Broom plants. We also cut some of the Comfrey the Arboretum offered us and Charlotte and Dottie will work with that to produce a green.
Please volunteer to weed again in July and August. Lynn will be maintaining the beds during those months. I plan to get some more mulch so the beds will be well mulched by then.
We still have room, so if anyone has ideas of what else we can plant now or has donations, please speak up! Our friends at Awbury and Weaver’s Way have shown interest in our beds and like what we are doing this year. We will probably be invited to various events and will need volunteers to be available for those events.
Stop by when you can to see the beds…..
