PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL STREET FAIR

Participants at the Philadelphia International Street Fair enjoyed a taste of weaving for the very first time. Everyone wanted to try PGHW's "Street Loom" and together all these first-time weavers finished a beautiful six foot long scarf in 4 hours!

Our annual juried exhibit proved to be a fantastic display of our members' diverse talents. We thank the members who submitted their work, members who donated valuable time and efforts to hang, host and break down the exhibit.

A deep appreciation also to our judges for their valuable time and feedback regarding each piece in our exhibit.

Penn Museum Conservation Tour

PGHW member Ginny Greene, who for many years was Head Conservator at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, offered PGHW members a unique opportunity to tour behind the scenes at the Penn Museum.
Focusing on textiles and baskets, Ginny guided two separate groups to view the contents of just a few of the many storage units that hold the vast collections. Participants were witness to spectacular textiles from Southeast Asia, Central and tSouh America, as well as bark cloth from the Pacific and baskets from the western United States.
Ginny also imparted some of the thought processes and procedures used in the conservation of textiles. A breathtaking conclusion to the tour was in the conservation lab where 3000 year-old textile fragments from Turkey were viewed. An amazing and memorable day for all in attendance!

The Philadelphia Guild of Handweavers is a non-profit organization whose mission is to foster the art and craft of weaving and the fiber arts.

We were organized in 1952 through the efforts of Joseph Acton, Bret Carberry, Ruth Dewees, Marion Lord, Helen Schobinger and Kathryn Wellman. In 1992, Russ Fawley, owner of Wilde Yarns, deeded the property at 3705 Main Street, Philadelphia, PA to the Guild. This building located in the Manayunk area of Philadelphia (across from the United Artist Theater) is now the permanent headquarters for the Guild and offers ample space for meetings, workshops and classes.

Membership in the Guild offers members not only the chance to increase learning but to be part of a community of other fiber artists. The Guild motto is "We Learn By Doing and Grow By Sharing".
